Between Beaches a Remote Cabin in Seldovia, Alaska
Five hours in the car, solo momming it with three small kids, then a 30 minute boat ride. All for the most amazing tide pooling experience of my life.
As a mom of three, I know that traveling with little kids isn’t always easy! Between long car rides or days spent on planes and airplanes, I’ve definitely had my fair share of solo adventure horror stories! So when we decided to make the trip to Between Beaches, I knew the destination had to be worth the effort.

Getting to Between Beaches Alaska
Our journey took about five hours by car before we even reached Homer. With three kids (ages 6, 4 and 1) five hours in the car is no small commitment. But once we arrived in Homer and traded the car for a boat taxi the good part started!
Between Beaches is located on the MacDonald Spit, across Kachemak Bay from Homer, just outside of Seldovia. Most people arrive by water taxi from Homer, but another option is flying into Seldovia or (tide allowing!) landing directly on the beach in front of the cabins!
Personally we take the water taxi ride took about 30 minutes. And honestly? It was an incredible ride surrounded by mountains, islands and the wild Alaska landscape.

A Remote Alaska Cabin Between Two Beaches
The name really does tell you exactly what makes this place so incredibly special. Between Beaches sits on a narrow spit of land with Kachemak Bay on one side and Kasitsna Bay on the other. The two beaches are just steps apart, with the cabins situated right in the middle, so you can experience completely different views just steps apart!
But is this a good place for kids? Yes! The beach is a playground in itself! The shells, the creatures, the waves! My kids spend hours exploring, digging, stacking rocks, and being chased by waves. Not to mention the fun driftwood swings overlooking the gorgeous beaches!
That’s the thing about Between Beaches though. The kids don’t need an elaborate itinerary, nature is the whole itinerary!
Okay but now for one of the very best parts. If you can, definitely plan your trip around the low tides! As an avid tide pooler I can honestly say this is world class tide pooling. Never in my life have I come across a wild octopus before, but here, I find multiple each day! From tiny babies barely bigger than a quarter to giants that stretch long tentacles across the beach! While the cabins and beaches are amazing enough to make the trek out there worth it the octopus definitely keep me coming back.

The Cabins at Between Beaches
Okay so the cabins! There are several different cabin options at Between Beaches and an even more luxurious Beach House.
The cabins themselves are tucked among the trees with each featuring a different but amazing view along the shore. They all are uniquely decorated with reclaimed materials and pieces from Alaska’s fishing history, keeping with the rustic luxury that is Between Beaches.

But Is Between Beaches Alaska Good for Families?
Yes! Omg yes 100x! Between Beaches is perfect for adventurous families who don’t mind a little extra effort getting there. But I would definitely say the remoteness is something families should understand before booking. This isn’t a traditional resort where you can walk down to a restaurant whenever you’re hungry. Between Beaches does not have any on site food service, so you’ll need to bring your groceries with you!
